High-accuracy position detection system designed for large-scale machine tools introduced

Nidec Machine Tool Corporation has launched the MPLJ series, a linear-type high-accuracy position detector designed for large machine tools and long-stroke applications. The system is intended to improve positioning performance while simplifying installation and maintenance in increasingly large-scale industrial equipment.

The series uses a proprietary MP Scale based on electromagnetic induction, delivering position detection accuracy of ±2.5 μm/m and supporting a maximum stroke length of up to 255 m. It is designed as an absolute system, allowing it to retain position data during power loss and eliminating the need for homing during startup. A single-cable configuration further reduces wiring requirements and installation complexity.

It supports modular scale segments in standard lengths of 1,000 mm, 750 mm, 500 mm, and 250 mm. This modular design improves transportability and allows easier maintenance, as only damaged sections need replacement.

The system also integrates an A/D converter and pre-amplifier into the sensor head, removing the need for an external signal conversion unit. This enables direct connection to the NC controller via a single cableA.

Built for harsh manufacturing environments, the position detector series features an IP67-rated, fully contactless structure that resists oil, dust, and machining chips while maintaining stable, long-term accuracy. The absolute position detection system combines incremental and absolute patterns and eliminates the need for a backup battery, reducing maintenance demands.

A multi-head configuration allows multiple sensors to be mounted on a single scale, enabling independent multi-axis control and greater design flexibility. Dedicated MP Checker II software supports installation verification, condition monitoring, and maintenance diagnostics.
