Powergrid has approved ₹705.51 crore for grid upgrades, including a pan-India VOIP system and emergency restoration towers, strengthening communication, disaster resilience, and domestic manufacturing in the power sector.
Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (Powergrid) has approved two major infrastructure projects worth ₹705.51 crore to strengthen national grid operations and enhance disaster preparedness.
The company’s Committee of Directors on Investment on Projects cleared the initiatives during its September 26 meeting.
The first project, valued at ₹209.68 crore, will establish a VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) communication system across all five regional grids–Northern, North Eastern, Southern, Western, and Eastern. This project, slated for commissioning by August 23, 2026, is expected to improve coordination and efficiency in managing India’s power transmission network.
The second project, with a budget of ₹495.83 crore, will procure 20 sets (300 towers) of Emergency Restoration System (ERS) under the Make in India initiative. Scheduled for commissioning by April 19, 2027, this system is designed to swiftly restore transmission lines during natural disasters or infrastructure failures, thereby strengthening India’s resilience in critical power supply.
Powergrid said these investments align with India’s goals of modernizing power infrastructure, improving reliability, and supporting domestic manufacturing.
The approvals underscore Powergrid’s proactive approach to addressing evolving challenges in energy security and maintaining a robust national grid.
