Storing the sun for cloudy days

Infineon’s high-efficiency semiconductor solutions make green energy more stable and reliable in any weather

Everyone knows that solar and wind are the future of energy. What most are not aware of is that generating green energy from renewables is only half the story. For the energy transition to truly take hold and replace fossil fuels such as coal and gas, these renewable energy sources must be as reliable – and resilient – as traditional power plants. And that means solving the challenge of energy storage and supply on a global scale. Without it, renewables remain dependent on the weather.

Jie Ding, General Manager of String Product, Utility PV Inverter BU at Sungrow, knows what is at stake – and knows that creating reliable storage at scale is key to successfully transitioning to renewables. With Infineon’s advanced semiconductors powering the world’s leading inverters and energy storage systems, Jie Ding and his team are making sure solar does not just lead the transition – it powers it. Every hour of every day. Around the globe.

From utility-scale solar farms to residential rooftops, Sungrow’s photovoltaic (PV) inverters and energy storage systems are in use in over 100 countries and regions. At the heart of their global success is a core of Infineon technology – semiconductors that deliver industry-leading efficiency, compact design, and long-lasting performance. Sungrow and Infineon are shaping the future power infrastructure with reliable and energy-efficient technologies.

Infineon’s silicon (Si), silicon carbide (SiC), and gallium nitride (GaN) based components are tailored for exactly this challenge. They reduce switching losses, increase power density, and operate under extreme conditions. That means higher energy efficiency, smaller system footprints, and lower costs over time. And with 870 GW of Sungrow inverter capacity already installed worldwide (*data as of December 2024), that impact is growing by the hour.

Starting January 2026, Infineon’s EasyPACK™ HD3 package will set the new benchmark for next-generation string inverters in utility-scale PV and energy storage systems. A single module from the EasyPACK™ HD3 family can handle over 465 kW of output power and deliver up to 30% more power during peak efficiency. Plus, it integrates Infineon’s latest IGBT, diode, and CoolSiC™ MOSFET technologies to deliver top-tier energy conversion with minimal loss.

Engineered for reliability and easy system integration, EasyPACK™ HD3 features high-performance materials like CTI600-rated housing for >2,000 V DC-bus operation and a 15% improvement in thermal resistance. Furthermore, EasyPACK™ HD3 can handle LVRT (low voltage ride through) grid faults and 3× overload in energy storage systems (ESS). High-current solder pins lower PCB (printed circuit board) temperatures, while the 12-mm design height and EasyPACK™ 3B pin-grid compatibility ensure seamless mechanical integration. EasyPACK™ HD3 is a powerful, flexible platform enabling clean energy to scale smarter, faster, and more reliably.
