ROHM and Tata Electronics seal power semiconductor partnership

Japanese power semiconductor specialist ROHM Co., Ltd. has signed a strategic partnership with Tata Electronics to manufacture semiconductors in India for both domestic and global markets. The deal strengthens industrial ties between Japan and India while supporting India’s ambitions to build a local semiconductor ecosystem.

For eeNews Europe readers, the partnership highlights how global device makers are reshaping supply chains through regional manufacturing, especially for automotive and power electronics. It also underlines India’s growing role as a backend manufacturing and packaging hub for advanced semiconductors.

Power devices first
The initial focus of the partnership is power semiconductors, an area where ROHM has a strong global position. The two companies will create a manufacturing framework in India by combining ROHM’s device design and process know-how with Tata Electronics’ backend assembly and test technologies.

As a first concrete step, Tata Electronics will assemble and test ROHM’s India-designed automotive-grade N-channel 100V, 300A silicon MOSFET in a TOLL package. The companies plan to ship the device in mass production next year and will jointly market the resulting products.

Beyond this first product, the partners plan to explore co-development of higher-value packaging technologies, aimed at improving performance and reliability for demanding applications such as automotive electrification and industrial power systems. By integrating their sales channels and customer networks, ROHM and Tata Electronics expect to open up new business opportunities in the fast-growing Indian electronics market.

Make in India meets global supply chains
The partnership aligns closely with the Indian government’s “Make in India” initiative and the broader concept of “Designed in India, Manufactured in India.” By localizing design, assembly, and testing, the collaboration aims to increase domestic value addition and provide a more stable supply of components optimized for Indian customers.

At the same time, the companies see India-based manufacturing as a way to strengthen resilience in global semiconductor supply chains. The partnership will also supply the manufactured products to international markets.

Discussing the partnership, Dr Randhir Thakur, CEO & MD, Tata Electronics, said, “Tata Electronics is deeply committed to pioneering a thriving semiconductor industry in India. We are excited to partner with ROHM, a global leader in semiconductor solutions. With a strong legacy of quality and reliability across products for a broad range of markets, ROHM brings deep domain expertise to this partnership. Through our semiconductor assembly and test facilities, Tata Electronics will deliver advanced chip packaging services to support ROHM in creating products tailored for Indian and global markets. This partnership will go a long way in bringing in trust and resilience in the global semiconductor supply chain while also expanding our respective business opportunities.”

From the ROHM side, Dr. Kazuhide Ino, Member of the Board, Managing Executive Officer, ROHM Co., Ltd., added, “We are delighted to collaborate with Tata Electronics, a leading Indian corporate group with advanced packaging capabilities. Through this partnership, we aim to expand our lineup of packaged products manufactured in India and help build a sustainable, region-based supply chain network. We are confident that this collaboration will enable us to meet the growing demand from Indian customers seeking domestically produced semiconductors. We also envision supplying jointly manufactured products to the global market.”
